Getting to Springkell

Springkell is in Dumfriesshire, in the south of Scotland, 7 miles from Lockerbie station on the main line between London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. For most of you, the trip is a flight, then a train, then our shuttle.

The short version

Take the train to

Lockerbie station

Lockerbie is 7 miles from Springkell, and we're arranging a shuttle from the station with Springkell. Trains come from Edinburgh (about 1 hour), Glasgow (about 1¼ hours) and London.

Fly into

Edinburgh, Glasgow or London

Edinburgh has the easiest rail link from its airport (a tram into the city, then the train). London has the most nonstop flights from the US.

Arrive

By Friday afternoon

Coming from the US? Land by Thursday 21 October so you have a night to beat the jet lag before Friday's welcome dinner.

The map, roughly

Taking the train

The train is the easiest way to reach Springkell. You don't have to drive on the left after a long flight, and we'll meet you at Lockerbie station.

Getting to Lockerbie

  • From Edinburgh: trains from Edinburgh Waverley or Haymarket take about 1 hour. From Edinburgh Airport, take the tram into the city first (about 35 minutes).
  • From Glasgow: trains from Glasgow Central take about 1¼ hours. From Glasgow Airport it's a 25-minute bus or taxi to Central.
  • From London or Manchester: some trains run direct; otherwise change at Carlisle, which is 18 minutes from Lockerbie.
  • Trains to Lockerbie run about every two hours, so check the times before you book your flight.

Tips for UK trains

  • Advance tickets go on sale about 12 weeks ahead and are much cheaper. Set a reminder for late July 2027.
  • Book on the National Rail, Avanti West Coast or Trainline websites. E-tickets on your phone work fine.
  • Travelling as two? A Two Together Railcard (about £35) takes a third off most fares.
  • Big luggage is fine; there are racks at the end of each carriage.

Springkell shuttle

We're working with Springkell to run transport from Lockerbie station to the house, timed to meet the trains on Friday and back on Sunday. Tell us your train in your RSVP.

Taxi

About 12 minutes from Lockerbie station or 25 from Carlisle. Book ahead if you arrive outside shuttle times, because there aren't many cars in the area.

Rental car

Only worth it if you plan to explore beyond the trains. Remember you'll drive on the left, and automatic cars need booking early. Springkell has free parking.

Flights from your city

Pick where you're starting from. Each option shows which days it runs and links to Google Flights, with dates set for Wednesday 20 to Monday 25 October.

Before you book

Coming from outside the UK? You must get a UK ETA

Everyone except British and Irish citizens needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding, including children, and including people flying in through Dublin. It costs £20 and takes a few minutes in the UK ETA app.
